The Sheepmeat Council is a peak council set up to look after sheep and lamb producers in Australia, including processors and exporters.
In a bizarre move, the Council has sought funding from Austrade (i.e. taxpayer’s money) for a scoping study about constructing an abattoir in Indonesia to process mutton and lamb. The hope is that an extra 1 million sheep could be exported live to Indonesia to this new facility for processing.
Now how clever is that? Taxpayers are funding a looney study which has as its key aim, the offshoring of Australian jobs in the mutton and lamb processing industry.
Value adding is better for the Australian economy, and regional jobs in regional abattoirs actually keeps rural and regional towns alive.
Deliberately offshoring Australian jobs is stupidity at its best and downright un-Australian!!
